PrEP (pre exposure prophylaxis for HIV)

PrEP

PrEP is the use of HIV medications to prevent the transmission of HIV.  When taken daily, PrEP is up to 99% effective in preventing HIV.  Currently, only one medication is approved for use as PrEP: tenofovir/emtricitabine.  It has been used for many years to treat HIV in people living with HIV.

PrEP is one of many tools used to reduce the risk of HIV transmission, in addition to condoms and undetectable viral load (when a person living with HIV is on treatment, and is virally supressed, they cannot transmit the virus).  PrEP does not prevent other sexually transmissible infections.

PEP

PEP is used POST-exposure for HIV and is only available in the Sunraysia region at the Accident and Emergency department at Mildura Base Hospital.  This is a time-critical drug and if you have been exposed to HIV you should go directly to the hospital.

Our sexual health nurses can provide you with information and you are welcome to attend our service for a private and confidential consultation.

Our Service

We provide:

  • advice, education and assessment for PrEP for HIV prevention
  • HIV and sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment
  • prescribing of PrEP for eligible people
  • free vaccines for eligible people
  • help with partner notification if diagnosed with an infection.

Eligibility

Our service is available to everyone, however PrEP isn’t necessary for all and we will discuss this during your consultation with the sexual health nurse.

We welcome and encourage people of culturally, sexually and ethnically diverse backgrounds and all consultations are strictly confidential, ensuring the highest standard of care.

Cost

There is no cost for the consultation, so feel free to make an appointment to discuss any concerns or ask questions of our nurse.  Our skilled nursing team will discuss PrEP and the process with you.

If tests are required, you will need to return for your results, and that appointment will be with one of our GPs.  Our GP practice bulk bills to Medicare for patients with a valid concession card (Pension, Commonwealth Seniors or Health Care Card), children under 16 years, and DVA patients.  Please make sure you have your Medicare card with you.
